On Thursday 16th January, 5th class pitted their chess skills against the 1st and 2nd year students in De La Salle college. It was a great experience for everyone and some of the 5th class boys even managed to win a few games of chess against their older peers. Chess has proven to be very beneficial in relation to maths problem solving strategies.
On Wednesday, 11th of December, 5th class paid a visit to the residents in St. Patrick's residential nursing home. 5th class played 'Silent Night' and 'The First Noel' on the tin whistle for the residents and they sang seven different Christmas carols including 'Rockin' around the Christmas tree', 'Winter Wonderland' and 'Jingle bells' for the residents as well. Both young and old enjoyed the day.
On Wednesday 4th December, 5th class attended a really interesting talk hosted by Jennifer Harris with the SlĂ organisation. It was a talk about the origins of most of our clothing and highlighting the impact of Christmas jumpers on our environment.
It was very informative and the class engaged in a lot of discussion about this topic afterwards.
On Thursday 24th October, 5th class did a Norman history walk around the perimeter of the Norman walls in Waterford. It was a really interesting walk and the class learnt a lot more about the Normans in Waterford.
